There is something deeply moving about welcoming home lifelong friends of the house. For nearly 30 years, Victory Chapel and now LAMP Ministries have had the distinct honor of partnering with missionaries David and Paula Parkman. This year marks an incredible milestone: their 50th year of missionary service in the Philippines.
Fifty years of obedience. Fifty years of watching God move. Through their decades of tireless labor, multiple generations of churches, pastors, and disciples have been raised up to transform communities across the nation.
When you spend that long on the frontlines of what God is doing, your life becomes a living tapestry of testimonies. True to form, the Parkmans returned with incredible stories of miraculous protection, mass baptisms, and strategic insights into what it takes to build a thriving, multiplying movement of disciples.
Riding Out the Shake: A Testimony of Miraculous Protection
To understand the urgent power of the spiritual principles the Parkmans share, you only have to look at what happened just weeks before their return. While preparing to leave for the airport from the southern island of Mindanao, a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck.
David and Paula found themselves on the 16th floor of a hotel building.
“That thing started rocking,” David recalls. “I’m not joking. It was moving like this. I thought for sure we were going to heaven. I grabbed Paula, we locked arms, and I said, ‘This is it, folks. We’re out of here.'”
In that intense moment of crisis, David began to pray. He reminded the Lord of their assignment, surrendered their lives to His hands, and began praying in the spirit. Slowly, the violent shaking began to calm.
The hotel was evacuated safely with absolutely zero loss of life. But the miracles didn’t stop there. Because the earthquake struck on a Monday morning at 7:30 a.m., thousands of local school children and teachers across the region were standing outside around their school flagpoles for the national anthem and pledge of allegiance. Even though several school buildings tragically collapsed during the quake, the children and staff were already outdoors in the courtyards. Everyone was safe.
God’s timing is precise. For over a year, believers around the globe had gathered weekly via Zoom to pray for the ministry conferences in the Philippines—covering the safety, the weather, and the travel. The enemy tried to sneak in a disruptive blow on Monday morning, but the shield of intercession held fast.
The Beauty of a Multitude: 5,500 Believers and Mass Baptisms
Following these miraculous events, the Parkmans witnessed the culmination of a massive spiritual harvest. Their recent ministry conference drew over 5,500 people representing 30 different nations, all unified under a single banner: aligning human minds with the divine agenda of God.
Immediately following the conference, a local church of roughly 7,000 members hosted a mass water baptism for 1,500 people who had given their lives to Christ since the start of the year.
This harvest was not an overnight accident. It was the intentional fruit of deep, relational discipleship. In these ministries, people aren’t simply led through a quick prayer and left on their own; they are brought into vibrant house churches (small groups of 12 to 15 people). They go through a rigorous, loving training process to learn exactly what it means to live as a Christian—understanding prayer, tithing, biblical stewardship, and community responsibility.
Only after they have been thoroughly discipled do they step into the waters of baptism, publicly declaring their alignment with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Triple-Braided Cord: What Makes Us Stronger Together?
Reflecting on the exploding growth of the global church and the profound protection they experienced, David points to a foundational truth found in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT).
We are always stronger when we work together in true unity. When analyzing what binds the body of Christ into an unbreakable, unshakeable movement, four distinct “spiritual cords” emerge:
1. The Cord of Prayer
Prayer is one of the most powerful, yet frequently neglected, assets given to the believer. Too often, people stop praying because they assume God isn’t listening or that their words carry no weight. Yet, Scripture guarantees that God hears every single cry.
Consider the testimony of a pastoral family in the Philippines who spent 60 years consistently praying for their rebellious younger brother. After six decades of wayward living, that brother finally walked into a church, surrendered his life fully to Jesus Christ, and was radically transformed. One year later, he passed away—safely home in the arms of the Father.
- Ask, Seek, Knock: Matthew 7 commands us to actively pursue God. We often lack because we do not ask, and we miss miracles because we aren’t actively looking for them.
- A Passion for the Lost: In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus looked at the crowds and was moved with deep compassion. He commanded His followers to pray for laborers to be sent into the harvest. If you love Jesus, you are called to either be a “goer” or a “sender.” True intercession sparks a missionary heart.
2. The Cord of Worship
If you want to catch the attention of heaven, lift up your voice in worship. The Bible declares that God inhabits and dwells within the praises of His people.
“As long as you stay in God’s presence and in His word, you will never spiritually die. Churches and people full of the presence of God will always be full of life.”
True church is about far more than listening to a sermon or singing a few catchy songs; it is an active, desperate pursuit of the tangible presence of God. When genuine praise goes up, His life-giving glory comes down.
Revelation 7:9 gives us a breathtaking preview of eternity: people from every tribe, tongue, nation, and color standing shoulder-to-shoulder before the throne of God. Worship breaks down cultural and generational walls, uniting our hearts in a singular language of adoration.
3. The Cord of the Word
The Word of God is the most potent tool at our disposal. You cannot separate God from His Word.
When we read the Word, it feeds our souls. But when we actively speak it and live it out, it releases supernatural power (dunamis) into our circumstances.
In the expanding Philippine movements, local pastors preach the exact same message across multiple Sunday services. Why? Because they want the entire spiritual family on the exact same page. Throughout the week, those believers take that singular word back into their house churches, dissecting it and finding practical, real-world applications for their lives today. Discipleship flourishes when the Word becomes foundational and actionable.
4. The Cord of the Spirit
Finally, we are bound together by the Holy Spirit. We cannot live the Christian life through raw human effort or sheer willpower. Jesus knew this, which is why He gave us a profound challenge coupled with a beautiful promise in John 14:15-17.
The Spirit of God dwells within us, providing the supernatural strength, comfort, and direction required to navigate a broken world. He is our helper in times of crisis, the one who guides us into all truth, and the divine engine behind every cross-cultural harvest.
Moving Forward Back-to-Back
Whether you are ministering in a local neighborhood or traveling halfway around the world, the mandate remains the same: reach out to God’s creation and bring them back into beautiful fellowship with Him.
Do not try to walk out your faith isolated or alone. Lean into the power of the triple-braided cord. Commit yourself to relentless prayer, passionate worship, the unfiltered Word of God, and total reliance on the Holy Spirit. Together, standing back-to-back, the global church cannot be defeated.
