Being The Body

Are you paying attention? Sometimes God has to tell me things more than once before I ‘get it’. Ephesians 4 has been coming up over and over recently. Pastor Curtis spoke about verse 14 a couple weeks ago, the youth studied the whole chapter last Tuesday, and Pastor Nate taught from verse 11 on Sunday. So . . . maybe I need to take a closer look today.

Ephesians 4:

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Surprise! Look at verse 13 sandwiched in between. Why does God give us the ministers? So that we all would reach unity AND maturity. How can the body function if it fights itself? If one leg goes one way and the other wants to go a different direction, we will never get anywhere. We have to learn to work together. We have to have a common purpose and vision of how to achieve it. But how?

Today I encourage you to turn your feet toward Jesus. As we all walk toward him and grow more like him, we will find ourselves working in unity. We will find ourselves becoming more mature, we will no longer be infants and insecure. We will naturally have a common purpose and love. We will be one body – the body of Christ!
