This month Pastor Nate will be exploring commonly misused bible verses and helping us to remember that “Context Matters”. He is taking up suggestions of other misused verses, so send him a message if you have one.
Yesterday we studied Philippians 4:13. It is a great verse. We love it. But let’s use it the way the apostle Paul meant it. This means we have to study its context. What was going on in the paragraph, who wrote it, who did they write it to, what time period, where was he? Paul was in a Roman prison house writing to churches he had planted. It had been prophesied he would be bound and taken and likely face death, but he was using every opportunity he had along the way to share his good news. He had learned to be content (and perservere) in any circumstance because he had found the answer – Following Jesus is the path to inner peace. And that’s what this verse is all about!
