Dig Deeper

We hope to eventually run a bible study once a week. This post contains the questions and information we pulled together for Love Casts Out Fear. It works better as discussion, and not just to read but this is what we’ve got.

Definitions:
Cast verb to throw (something) forcefully in a specified direction.

Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

History:
Synonyms of fear: Terror, fright, fearfulness, horror, alarm, panic, agitation, trepidation, dread, consternation, dismay, distress, anxiety, worry, angst, unease, uneasiness, apprehension, apprehensiveness, nervousness, and the list goes on and on

Phobos (Ancient Greek: Φόβος, meaning “fear”) is the personification of fear in Greek mythology. This is where we get our English word phobia.

Fear of God refers to fear or a specific sense of respect, awe, and submission to Him.

Bible Trivia:
We found 336 uses of fear in the bible (NIV) and 205 uses of afraid. To balance that out, we found 18 times the bible says “do not fear” and 686 instances of love! We recommend looking up the second set of verses if you need a little pick me up.

Verse References:
– Never leave us or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5 actually quoting old Testament Deuteronomy 31:6 and 8
– Provide for our needs Matthew 6:18-34
– Protect us. Psalm 32:7, John 17:15
– Work all circumstances for our good. Romans 8:28
-We are precious to him. Psalm 139:13-16

Final Thoughts:
So much of what we fear is never realized. An acronym for fear is “false evidence appearing real”. When we are afraid, it is almost always due to a lie. Fear is a tool of the devil. Don’t forget our theme of the week – Love Casts Out Fear (1 John 4:18). God has got this. Give your fear to him and walk in freedom today.
