Emotions are Not Bad

Have you ever been told you need to move on or you should be over something by now? Sometimes the things people say to us when we are dealing with our emotions are not helpful. Sometimes they don’t understand, sometimes they just say the things that people said to them, but most of the time they are trying to be helpful – yet failing.

Grief comes in waves. Grief comes when you least expect it. Grief can blindside you years after a loss. There are stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) and you can sit in one of them for a long time before you are ready to move to the next one and then everything becomes fresh again. Do not accept the lie that there is something wrong with you just because you still have a hurt. Do not accept the lie that you have to ignore your feelings. Emotions are not bad. They are indicators that let us know that something still hurts. Time doesn’t heal your emotional wounds, sometimes they just scab over. To heal, you need to let God help.

Let the God of the universe, the one who knows you best and loves you, help you carry your burdens. Hear this promise from the savior. Matthew 11: 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He doesn’t promise you will feel better right away, but he does promise to walk the road with you as you go on your healing journey.

*Note: If the emotion you are experiencing becomes debilitating to the point where you cannot function and perform your daily responsibilities, please seek professional help, this situation is not what we are discussing in this post.
