When you love someone, you want the best for them. It is so satisfying when something great happens to someone you love or when they make a great choice or are honored for something they have done. It makes you want to celebrate! The reason we do this is because it is part of our DNA as children of God. We rejoice over others because God rejoices over us!
Our 5 yo got baptized yesterday. It had been rescheduled multiple times due to COVID, but yesterday it finally happened. He was so happy and excited! And we were too. We rejoiced with him. Did you know that God and the angels have a party in heaven every time a lost child of God comes home. Luke 15:10 “Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Our son wasn’t saved yesterday – his heavenly party was awhile back. But I do think God rejoiced when Joel was obedient to him in baptism.
Another great verse (chapter) about God rejoicing over us is in Zephaniah chapter 3. Some people have called this section of scripture God’s lullaby. Let these words wash over you today. They are foreshadowing a time when the trials and tribulations of God’s people will be over and God will sing over us. How beautiful!
17 “The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
There are multiple other verses that show that God is a singing and rejoicing God. There are a few places that mention that Jesus sang and worshiped. It feels like there is so much sadness and hate in the world. Maybe we need to spend time rejoicing today. Let us sing over our loved ones and rejoice in their victories. And let us listen to the love song God is singing to us today!
