Acts 2:7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
God understands you, but even better than that, God speaks to you. God speaks your language. God doesn’t want there to be a communication barrier, he wants your complete understanding. He even goes so far as to give a special spiritual gift to his children – the gift of speaking in tongues.
The events of Acts 2 are so amazing and miraculous. The Jews had seen some awesome things from God in their history, but he had been silent for over 600 years before the time of Jesus. How sad to be a chosen people and get the silent treatment. The silence was broken when Jesus came and spent his time teaching and correcting and saying some pretty counter-cultural things. And then, Pentecost! During the festival of the harvest, when many Jews from foreign countries were visiting Jerusalem, God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. And what signs accompanied this gift? The sign of tongues. Each one was speaking the wonders of God in a different language, but it wasn’t just gibberish. The foreign Jews were hearing the good news each in their own language. God was speaking directly to their hearts, in their birth languages! He didn’t want anyone within earshot to miss out on the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.
God speaks your language and has some pretty good news for you today. He loves you! And he wants to tell you. Love speaks.
