One of the few times in my life so far that I feel like I heard the audible voice of God was in the midst of our fifth miscarriage. We discovered the baby had been a boy and I was crying out my anger. We were living in Phoenix at the time, it was in the middle of the night, and it was raining. (It doesn’t rain very often in Phoenix.) It seemed to me that God was crying with me as I listened to the rain on the roof and he said to me, “I know how you feel, I also lost a son.” What an idea! God knows how we feel not only because he created our emotions, but also because he has been there.
I have heard it said that John 11:35 is the shortest bible verse, “Jesus wept.” Jesus was mourning the loss of his friend Lazarus and emphasizing with the sisters – Mary and Martha – and their friends. I believe he knew that he was going to raise Lazarus even before he got there, but he still took the time to let his emotions show.
Our emotions are not bad. Sadness and grief are not evil. Anger is not immoral. It is how we respond and react that could get us into trouble. Jesus lived as a man and had great emotions just like us. The Psalms are so comforting to so many because they are raw and real. If you need to vent some frustration or cry out to God, you can find one that helps you put your feelings into words. God can handle what we are going through, he knows how we feel.
Love weeps for the loss of a loved one. Love weeps for the people who are lost and without hope. Love weeps!
