Have you ever found yourself standing on the sidelines of life, feeling overlooked, unvalued, or wondering what your true purpose is?
Whether it was being picked last for a childhood playground game or feeling isolated in adulthood, many of us struggle with belonging. We look around at our physical circumstances—our job status, bank accounts, relationships, and health—and evaluate our worth based on what we can see, touch, and hold.
However, in the opening chapter of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul reveals a profound truth that flips the world’s perspective upside down: before the creation of the universe, God established a cosmic plan for your life. You are not an afterthought, a random accident, or a second-class citizen in God’s kingdom. Through Jesus Christ, you have been granted an eternal inheritance filled with spiritual blessings that no earthly circumstance can ever take away.
In our recent message studying Ephesians 1, we explored what it means to be united with Christ and examined the incredible, unshakeable spiritual blessings God has poured out on His people.
Setting the Scene: A Timeless Letter for the Body of Christ
To fully appreciate the message of Ephesians, it is helpful to understand the context in which it was written. Paul preached for nearly three years in Ephesus at the Hall of Tyrannis, a public Greek forum. Ephesus was a major cultural and religious hub in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), dominated by the worship of Artemis. In the shadow of idol worship, pagan rituals, and cultural pressure, Paul boldly preached a new message of hope and redemption.
While early manuscripts suggest this pastoral letter circulated among multiple churches across Asia Minor rather than just Ephesus, its broader audience makes it uniquely applicable to us today. Unlike some of Paul’s letters (such as 1 Corinthians), which address hyper-specific regional sins or church conflicts, Ephesians presents timeless theological truths about the universal Church.
Ephesians is generally split into two distinct halves:
- Chapters 1–3: What God has done for us through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
- Chapters 4–6: How we ought to respond and live as God’s holy people in light of those truths.
Whereas the Book of Romans focuses heavily on individual salvation, Ephesians places its lens on the collective body of Christ—the Church. It unpacks how God takes diverse individuals—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, young and old—and weaves them together into one unified family.
Physical vs. Spiritual Blessings: Where Does Real Value Lie?
When most people think of “blessings,” they immediately picture physical, material things: a new car, a home, financial security, or physical comfort. While physical gifts are appreciated, Jesus warns us in the Gospels not to store up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal.
Physical blessings are temporary. Think of legacy physical media—like cassette tapes or vinyl records left inside a hot car on a summer day. Over time, heat, wear, and environmental conditions degrade them until they warp and decay.
Spiritual blessings, by contrast, are indestructible. They are stored securely in the heavenly realms. They do not rot, warp, expire, or degrade over time. Wherever you go—through life’s highest peaks or deepest valleys—these spiritual assets belong to you in Christ Jesus.
Let’s look at the six profound spiritual blessings outlined in Ephesians 1:3–14.
1. You Are Loved and Chosen by God
“All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” (Ephesians 1:3–4)
Before the foundations of the world were laid, God knew you and chose you.
When humans choose teams, we usually pick based on merit, beauty, skill, or social standing. But God doesn’t pick players based on performance. Despite knowing our flaws, weaknesses, and eventual sins, God looked across eternity and said, “I want them on My team.”
Furthermore, God’s choice isn’t restricted by human pedigree or background. In the New Testament context, both Jews and Gentiles were called into equal standing. God chose us to demonstrate His unconditional love and character to the world—a love that transcends cultural boundaries, personal merit, and past mistakes.
2. You Have Full Rights as an Adopted Child
“God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” (Ephesians 1:5)
God didn’t just save you from punishment; He adopted you into His personal family.
In ancient Roman and Jewish cultures, adoption was a legally binding process carrying immense privilege. An adopted child received full legal rights to the family name and inheritance, standing as a co-heir with natural-born children.
God did not have to grant us family status. He could have saved us from judgment while keeping us at distance as forgiven subjects. Instead, out of His sheer love and good pleasure, He brought us into His inner circle as co-heirs with Christ.
Are You Living in the Cabin or Dining in the Main Room?
Consider the story of a couple who saved every penny they had to purchase tickets for an ocean cruise. Wanting to conserve their remaining money, they brought crackers, peanut butter, and bread in their luggage. Throughout the entire journey, while other guests enjoyed lavish buffets and fine dining, this couple stayed in their cabin eating plain sandwiches.
Near the end of the trip, a crew member asked why they never joined the main dining room. They replied, “We spent all our money on the tickets, so we couldn’t afford the meals.” The crew member smiled and said, “Didn’t you look at your ticket? All meals were included!”
Many Christians live their spiritual lives like that couple. We come to God pleading, begging, and feeling unworthy, asking for breadcrumbs of grace. Yet God says, “Look at your ticket! Through My Son, you have full rights as My child. Come sit at the table and enjoy the feast.”
3. You Are Redeemed and Forgiven
“He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us along with all wisdom and understanding.” (Ephesians 1:7–8)
To understand “redemption,” we must look at ancient terminology associated with the slave trade. A slave standing on a public redemption block could not buy their own freedom. Freedom required a benefactor to step forward, pay the full ransom price, and set the captive free.
Spiritual redemption operates under the same principle. Humanity was enslaved to sin, facing a debt we could never afford to pay. On the cross, Jesus stepped up to the redemption block. He didn’t pay our ransom with gold or silver, but with His own precious blood.
Because the debt has been fully settled by Christ, your forgiveness is a present-tense reality. You don’t have to earn God’s favor or repay an impossible debt. In His divine wisdom and understanding, God determined that investing in your salvation was worth the ultimate price.
4. You Have Insight into God’s Cosmic Purpose
“God has revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ, which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.” (Ephesians 1:9–10)
When Paul speaks of God’s “mystery,” he isn’t referring to a whodunit detective novel. In the Biblical context, a mystery is something that was previously hidden from human reasoning but has now been openly revealed by God.
For centuries, humanity tried to figure out the path to God through complex religious systems, self-effort, or pagan rituals. But God revealed His ultimate plan through Jesus Christ. God’s grand design is to unify all things in heaven and on earth under the supreme authority of Jesus.
God hasn’t left His church in the dark about where history is headed. He has let us in on the secret: Christ reigns victorious, and all creation will ultimately be brought into harmony under His lordship.
5. You Are Included in God’s Eternal Plan
“Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan…” (Ephesians 1:11)
Without a divine goal, human life quickly degenerates into a endless rat race. We wake up, commute to work, pay bills, care for chores, go to sleep, and repeat. If that routine is all there is to life, it inevitably leads to emptiness and burnout.
However, God includes us directly in the execution of His divine purpose. As Rick Warren highlighted in The Purpose Driven Life, our fundamental human purpose is to love, serve, and glorify God.
Notice that God calls us into a collective body, not a solitary existence. You cannot fulfill your purpose as a “lone ranger” Christian. First Peter 2:9 reminds us: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
The Beauty of the Tapestry
Imagine a weaver using only pure gold thread to make a tapestry. While gold is valuable, a solid sheet of gold thread lacks contrast, pattern, depth, and artistic beauty. But when the weaver interlaces gold with vibrant blues, purples, reds, and varied textures, a breathtaking masterpiece emerges.
God does not create solitary threads of gold. He weaves individual believers—with various backgrounds, personalities, and gifts—into a beautiful spiritual tapestry known as the Church. Together, we encourage one another, spur each other on toward love and good deeds, and display God’s multi-faceted wisdom to the world.
6. You Are Sealed by the Holy Spirit
“And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised, and that he has purchased us to be his own people.” (Ephesians 1:13–14)
In the ancient world, an official royal seal pressed into hot wax signified ownership, authority, and security. It declared, “This belongs to the King. Do not tamper with it.”
When you place your trust in Jesus, God places His Holy Spirit within you as an indelible spiritual seal. The Spirit serves as God’s official mark of ownership over your life. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit acts as a deposit—a down payment or guarantee—insuring the full inheritance that awaits you in eternity.
We experience the genuine presence and power of the Holy Spirit now, but this is just a foretaste of the glory that will be fully revealed when we step into eternity with God.
Living as Royalty: The Story of Mephibosheth
How should we walk in light of these incredible spiritual blessings?
Consider the Old Testament account of Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9). Mephibosheth was the grandson of King Saul and the son of Jonathan. He had been crippled in both feet from a young age. In ancient times, when a new royal dynasty took power, it was standard practice for the new king to execute all surviving relatives of the former king to eliminate potential rivals.
Mephibosheth lived in hiding, likely assuming King David would seek his life. He carried the physical reminder of his family’s fallen legacy and lived in fear of royal judgment.
Yet, because of David’s deep covenant love for Jonathan, David sought out Mephibosheth. But David didn’t summon him for execution; he restored all of Saul’s land to him and invited Mephibosheth to sit permanently at the king’s personal dining table as one of his own sons.
Every day for the rest of his life, Mephibosheth sat at the king’s table. While his crippled feet were covered beneath the tablecloth, he enjoyed the rich banquets and fellowship of the royal court.
Like Mephibosheth, many of us carry the scars, brokenness, and crippled legacies of our past. We tend to hide from God, fearing that if He draws close, He will condemn us. But through Jesus Christ, the King of Kings invites us out of hiding. He pardons our sins, restores our lost inheritance, covers our brokenness with His grace, and bids us to sit permanently at His royal table.
Step Into Your Inheritance Today
The spiritual blessings of Ephesians 1—being loved, chosen, adopted, redeemed, enlightened, included, and sealed—are not items you can earn, buy, or achieve through human striving. They are free gifts offered to anyone who is in Christ Jesus.
If you have been living as a spiritual orphan, eating plain crackers in your cabin while missing out on the feast God prepared for you, today is the day to step into your true identity.
- Accept the Invitation: If you have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, invite Him into your heart today. Receive His forgiveness and allow Him to adopt you into God’s family.
- Engage with the Body: Do not walk this journey alone. Connect with a local, Bible-believing church community where you can grow, serve, and build meaningful relationships.
- Walk in Confidence: Step out into your workplace, school, neighborhood, and home knowing who you are. You are not defined by your past or your earthly struggles; you are a chosen, redeemed, sealed child of the Most High God.
