What is kindness?

If we are going to be kind, we need to know what that means. It seems a little nebulous in that it is dependent on the situation and the person you are dealing with. The dictionary says it is “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” I think I would define it as “putting other’s needs before your own”.

Below are some verses in the bible that address kindness. I’m sure I didn’t get them all. Read them and then consider what kindness looks like for you today, especially with those you might not feel like being kind to.

Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

Proverbs 14:21
It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.

Proverbs 19:17
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Galatians 2:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

2 Timothy 2:24
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.
